Hawaii - Visting with your pet

Hawaii is a rabies free State while the Continental United States are not, thus pets have not been allowed into Hawaii unless they went into quarantine.

The Hawaii legislature recognizing the importance of traveling pet owners changed the rules so that visitors to the Islands could bring their pet along. Currently the rules only apply to Dogs & Cats.

Even thought they have not made it easy and it is expensive, if you prepare properly they will release your pet to you immediately upon arrival at the Honolulu airport.

Step One - Veterinarian Certificate - Must be an original - no photocopies. This certificate must be issued by your veterinarian not more than 14 days prior to your arrival in Hawaii. Vaccinations: The pet must have been vaccinated at least twice in its lifetime for rabies and those vaccinations must be more than 90 days apart. If the vaccine was of the one-year license then the latest vaccination must have been done not more than 12 months prior to the pet's arrival in Hawaii. If the vaccine was of the 3-year license then the latest vaccination must have been done not more than 18 months prior to arrival in Hawaii. In either case the latest vaccination must have been done no more than 90 days prior to arrival in Hawaii.

The certificate from your veterinarian must state the most recent vaccination date, and the previous vaccination date. The certificate must indicate the vaccine name, lot or serial number, booster interval, vaccination date, expiration date and whether it was of the one or three year license type. Good Health: The certificate must state that the pet is in good health and that it has been treated for Ticks not more than 14 days prior to arrival in Hawaii with the product Fibronil or an equivalent long lasting product. Indicate on the certificate the date of the treatment and the product used.

Step Two - Microchip The certificate from your veterinarian must state the number of the microchip and it must contain the fact that the veterinarian was able to scan the chip successfully.

The chip must be of the standard US issue (Avid) or (Home Again) type. The microchip must be implanted prior to the pet's blood test.

Step Three - OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test You must have a certificate from an approved laboratory showing that the result of the test was greater than or equal to 0.5IU/ml. The certificate must show the pets microchip number. The blood test must be done not more than 18 months and not less than 120 days prior to arrival in Hawaii.

Your veterinarian must take a blood sample from your pet and ship it to:

Step Four - Application Send the originals of these documents - no photocopies to:

Enclose a cashiers check or money order in the amount of $165.00 per pet.

The documents and check must arrive 10 days before the pet's arrival. Since the documents cannot be prepared by your veterinarian more than 14 days prior to arrival you must send them by Federal Express to qualify for airport release of the pet.

Step Five - Arrival You may only enter Hawaii through Honolulu International Airport and only between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. Your pet will be taken from the airport to the quarantine center located at 99-951 Halawa Valley Road, Aiea, Hawaii 96701 - Telephone 808 483-7151.

You will pick up your pet at that location
