BARCStoberfest, A Pet Fair and Adoption Festival
Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD

Baltimore, MD., Dogs. puppies, cats and kittens are undeniably cute and they provide us with unconditional love, companionship and happiness. It's easy to make these and other pets a part of your family and that's why BARCS is organizing BARCSTOBERFEST, its very first fundraiser and community outreach event! Scheduled for October 8th, 2005 from 11:00am to 4:00pm at Patterson Park, the event will showcase some of the animals currently available for adoption at BARCS. This event will be fun for the whole family and people are encouraged to bring their own pets. Activities include: Pet Adoptions, Rescued Pet Parade, pet contests, agility demonstrations, Baltimore City Police K-9 demonstration, pet acupuncture, massage, grooming, obedience training, pet health, spay/neuter information, artists, food, vendors, musical band The Big Red T's, and a silent auction. As a true community event being held in one of the most widely used parks in the city, we expect approximately 1,000 people and their pets to attend. Admission to the festival is free; donations are appreciated. With a population of over 600,000 people in Baltimore city and an estimated 355,000 pets, approximately 60% or three out of five people in the city own pets. BARCSTOBERFEST is designed to raise awareness of the fact that BARCS receives an estimated 17,000 unwanted, abused or stray animals each year that need help. In addition, the shelter also manages 32,000 animal welfare enforcement cases. While many people think of the shelter as just a place for dogs and cats, it helps all types of animals including birds, reptiles, rabbits and other wild animals. In recognizing the need to have a city animal shelter that serves as a true resource for the people and animals of Baltimore, the city animal shelter has been granted 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and renamed the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). This means that in addition to receiving funding from Baltimore City, BARCS now has the critical ability to raise private funding from the community and significantly enhance its volunteer and programmatic efforts. Created in 2005, the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Inc. (BARCS), is a non-profit organization. We work in conjunction with the Baltimore City Bureau of Animal Control. Together our mission is to protect animals from neglect, abuse and exploitation, to advocate their interests and welfare, and to inspire awareness and compassion for all living things. The day-to-day operation of BARCS involves the direct handling of lost, abandoned, unwanted and injured pets and wildlife. We accept all animals. BARCS encourages adoption of its animals by providing a low-cost adoption package, which includes the animal's neuter/spay surgery and first vaccinations. To ensure that only caring and responsible owners adopt our animals, we also require all new owners to attend an adoption course. During the class, the adopter is issued a city license (city residents only), rabies certificate, and an adoption package that includes helpful information regarding pet ownership.
