Online Dating Service Matches Pet Lovers and Their Pets
BURLINGAME, CALIFORNIA (September 1, 2004)--Connecting pet-lovers and their pets across the country, datemypet.com launches its official web site on September 1, 2004, following five months of beta testing, which has already attracted thousands of enthusiastic pet-lovers to the site.
"If you want to date me, you have to date my pet," is the philosophy behind datemypet.com, based on the assumption that if potential suitors are both pet lovers, the dating process will go a bit more smoothly. Founded by self-professed geek and entrepreneur Robert Yau (along with his faithful dog, Hershey), datemypet.com matches animal lovers to animal lovers and animals to animals. Sort of like a built-in double date.
The idea for the web site came to Yau while walking his dog in his nearby neighborhood park. His dog, Hershey, was always a magnet for conversation, with people stopping to admire the dog and talk about their own pets. Yau says "total strangers would be talking like old friends," and it became obvious to him that pets provide that instant connection. With this newfound knowledge, Yau developed datemypet.com, which connects pets and their owners around the country and allows singles to meet other singles who are devoted to their pets.
Datemypet.com has already attracted a lot of media attention, garnering coverage on "Live with Regis & Kelly," USA Today, LA Times.com, and even Asahi TV from Japan, which featured one of the site's New York member on a date with the station's reporter and his dog.
Born and raised in London, Robert Yau now lives in California with his dog Hershey. With a computer science degree, he came to Silicon Valley, where he worked for a number of successful start-up companies. A technologist and a patent holder, datemypet.com is Yau's latest and most beloved venture.
